Careful with AI: the ethics of artificial intelligence in healthcare

Artificial Intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in healthcare. AI systems help to make diagnoses, advice on treatment, and inform medical research. This brings new ethical challenges to the work of medical professionals, and also to the developers of AI systems. How to take responsibility for decisions made on the basis of advice from AI systems? How to ensure inclusiveness and respect for autonomy and diversity? How to educate healthcare professionals for AI-based care? The lecture will build on the ethical framework for Artificial Intelligence that UNESCO is currently developing with an Ad Hoc Expert Group of which Peter-Paul Verbeek is vice chair.
