cso - River BioMedics

Marcelo is leading the scientific development of River BioMedics. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry form Lisbon University, Portugal. In 2008, he moved to the Netherlands, where he completed his Master’s in Drug Innovation at Utrecht University. During his PhD research, at the department of Anatomy and Embryology of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) headed by Prof. dr. Christine Mummery, he specialized in hiPSC-derived cardiomyocyte maturation and disease modelling. In the past 4 years, Marcelo held a Postdoc position at the department of Applied Stem Cell Technologies at the University of Twente headed by Prof. dr. Robert Passier, where he acquired extensive knowhow on tissue engineering, microfluidics and organ-on-chip technology. Marcelo has an active entrepreneurial spirit and strong will to translate his research into a commercial product for societal valorization.

Human 3D cardiac organ-on-chip to model cardiovascular disease in vitro

Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 cause of death worldwide. Unfortunately the number of new cardiovascular medicines coming to market has been steadily decreasing. We have developed a new cardiovascular screening platform using human 3D cardiac tissues in a organ-on-chip device. Furthermore we have successfully mimicked cardiac disease using this platform. -
