AI-based Modeling of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Progression

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are focal, progressive dilatations that may rupture with fatal consequences. AAA patients are monitored through periodic imaging, where the aneurysm diameter is used to select patients eligible for surgical repair. However, it is well-known that this one-dimensional measurement taken at discrete time points is not a perfect predictor of rupture: small aneurysms may still rupture, and untreated large aneurysms might never rupture. We developed an AI-based model that automatically extracts the 3D AAA shape from CT scans taken at irregular intervals, and provides a continuous estimation of the AAA growth process. This allows us to visualize the aneurysm at any point during monitoring, including in-between outclinic visits. This has potential value for patient-specific clinical decision making and may shed light on the complex relation between aneurysm shape, growth and rupture.

BIOGRAPHY

Dieuwertje Alblas is a PhD candidate in the Mathematics of Imaging and AI (MIA) group in the EEMCS faculty. After finishing her bachelor and master in applied mathematics, she discovered that she had a passion for applying mathematics in a clinical setting. Her project focuses on developing AI-based image processing methods that assist clinicians in monitoring of and decision making in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
