The Life Long Learning expedition

The Life-Long Learning Expedition

Jump aboard the TechMed Academy Express and immerse yourself in a lifelike learning environment. This journey will guide you through various stations, offering a firsthand experience of our unique educational approach. As we embark on this educational adventure, you will be immersed in the TechMed Academy’ core concepts like ‘the adaptive professional’ and ‘deliberate practice’. The expedition provides a unique opportunity to experience the value of simulation education in the life long learning continuum for the (technical)medical professional. The expedition will lead you through 3 sessions which emphasize the importance of conscious competence, reflection & feedback, the deep understanding at a fundamental level and hands-on training.
These key aspects form the solid basis for the full range of the TechMed portfolio; from high precision skill training to non-technical skill team and communication training.

The programme

The session commences with a brief presentation by Michelle Heijblom, the department head of TechMed Academy at the University of Twente, and Erik Maartens, education developer at TechMed Academy. They introduce TechMed Academy and its educational principles for professionals. Following this introduction, participants embark on a unique journey, splitting into two distinct "trains" to explore typical TechMed Academy training settings.

At Station 1, Professor Bob Geelkerken from the University of Twente and vascular surgery consultant at MST Hospital performs an open surgical procedure with an AIOS (Assistant in Training) in a simulated environment. This stop illuminates how medical procedures can be trained in a simulated environment, easing the burden on direct patient care.

Station 2 finds anesthesiologist Lester Oey from MST Hospital working with colleagues on scenario training in the ICU. In this setting, participants engage in practicing scenarios that are not commonly encountered clinically, focusing on honing non-technical skills. A significant emphasis will be placed on reflection and feedback process in acute clinical care.

At Station 3, resident in cardiology, Marlies Kok, takes the lead in a simulated minimally invasive procedure. The discussion centers on how certain aspects of training can be conducted outside the hospital setting. Marlies elucidates the importance of mastering complex technical skills in a simulated environment before attempting them on actual patients. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to perform part of the procedure themselves.
