BRAFO – Balanced Rehabilitation after an Ankle Fracture Operation
Loading of the ankle after an ankle fracture (operation) starts in the 7th week of rehabilitation. Research has shown that this is already possible at an earlier stage in controlled circumstances, without side effects. It even appeared to accelerate the return to work and sports. The BRAFO project aims to develop a wearable system to estimate 3D forces and moments at the ankle, so that the patient can start earlier weight-bearing in a controlled setting. For this, instrumented crutches are developed. In combination with pressure insoles and inertial measurement units, it was tested in both healthy subjects and patients to determine which information is at least needed to estimate the 3D forces at the ankle.
