The session
According to research conducted by ABF Research for the Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), the shortage of healthcare staff is projected to reach 135,000 employees by 2031, impacting the entire healthcare sector. The majority of this shortage, around 98,000 jobs, will be in hospitals and elderly care. The growing gap between supply and demand in healthcare is often metaphorically referred to as a "crocodile's mouth." The upper jaw represents the increasing demand for care due to the ageing population, while the lower jaw represents the declining number of young people, resulting in heightened work pressure and labour shortages. To address this issue, the application of medical technology, including telehealth, AI, medical equipment, apps, robotics, and digitization, among other solutions, is seen as a way to mitigate the widening "crocodile's mouth." According to the Gupta report commissioned by FME last year, medical technology has the potential to reduce personnel employment by half.
This session puts healthcare professionals at the center. They are a core key to building future-proof and resilient healthcare systems. In this interactive and interdisciplinary session we discuss several questions to foster sustainable employment in healthcare: How do the new organizational concepts and technological advancements change the behaviour and identity of healthcare professionals? What are the effects of technology on employee deployment in healthcare (networks)? How do we organize current and future healthcare processes efficiently about the required, available, and preferred mix of skilled professionals?
This session is co-organized by the interdisciplinary working group ‘technology in healthcare transformations’, read more.
